I began by dealing with the biggest problem first, which was to lighten the image and rescue the shadow detail. I did this by going to the Basic panel, where I applied the adjustments shown here to lighten Exposure, lighten Shadows, and fine-tune Whites and Blacks clipping points. The aim here was to achieve a full tone contrast that could be thither manipulated using the Tone Curve panel.
